Rizla Suzuki MotoGP and Draggin continue their partnership
Rizla Suzuki MotoGP is pleased to confirm its continuing relationship with Draggin as its official jeans supplier.
Draggin will be supplying Álvaro Bautista and the Rizla Suzuki crew with its range of protective jeans for the third season in succession. Draggin will also supply the team’s cargos and shorts. The tough working conditions of a MotoGP pit-box are perfectly matched to Draggin products and the whole team will benefit from using the Australian company’s designs. For road riding, Draggin are lined with a revolutionary hybrid of knitted Dyneema, the World’s Strongest Fibre, and Kevlar®, which makes them so strong that they can withstand at least 4.4 seconds of abrasion resistance whilst also being lightweight and comfortable.
Draggin is the world leader in the protective jeans and they are the makers of the only CE Approved motorcycle jean in the world. Grant Mackintosh founded Draggin in 1997 and shortly began marketing his new invention by literally putting his backside on the line to prove the quality of his product. Grant was dragged behind a motorbike, with the drag test starting out at a slow pace and gradually building up to over 110km per hour! Since the very first drag test was conducted, many Draggin fans that have complete faith in the product have put their backsides on the road to prove time and time again how remarkable the product is! Draggin does however warn people that it is a stunt and shouldn’t be tried at home! Video footage of the now famous drag test can be viewed on Draggin’s own website.
Rizla Suzuki will be using Draggin’s range of shorts, cargos, and jeans at all MotoGP events this year and look forward to a happy and successful partnership with the Australian company. More info can be found on Draggin’ Jeans at www.dragginjeans.net
Fiona Mackintosh – Draggin, General Manager:
“This is the third year that Draggin has sponsored the Rizla Suzuki team. We keep getting involved because the Rizla Suzuki team are great people and we believe in what one another are striving for. All the best to the team and Álvaro for a successful season!”
Paul Denning – Team Manager:
“We have slowly developed our relationship with Draggin Jeans since Chris Vermeulen introduced us in 2008, and we are proud to be associated with a great company and an innovative, stylish safety product – one which enhances the pleasure of riding for all its customers. The products supplied to the team are high quality, stylish and practical - Draggin are a great addition to the MotoGP paddock”.

AUSSIE BUSINESS TRUMPS EUROPEAN STANDARDS
On 25 March, after 5 years of research and development Draggin Jeans has been recognised for producing the first motorcycle jean in the world to receive full CE Approval. It has trumped major global businesses - not bad for a family owned business from Australia.
This level of approval is reached only by a handful of motorcycle garments, and never has it previously been granted to a street fashion jean.
Grant Mackintosh, CEO and founder of Draggin Jeans, was elated to receive word of this incredible safety endorsement. “This is a fantastic result that we were confident we would receive. It is gratifying to now have the certification hanging in our Head Office. Whilst some of the biggest names in leather and synthetic motorcycle clothing have given up trying to gain the same approval, we have always maintained absolute faith in our product and its amazing safety features.“
The SATRA Technology Centre is an independent body that operates out of Northamptonshire in the United Kingdom and is ultimately responsible for granting CE Approval. Draggin Jeans have been sending their products to the labs for almost 5 years with the goal of improving safety and obtaining CE approval.
"We have always had the safest lining in the market however the requirements for CE approval are very strict so we are elated.
Whether a rider purchases our entry level Classic Jeans or the fully CE Approved Jean, they will find the same protective lining in all of the crash points." said Mackintosh
Obtaining CE Approval is no easy feat. Draggin works with the most recognised safety consultants in the industry such as Paul Varnsverry, one of the most well respected names in motorcycle safety has been instrumental in improving safety standards throughout the world. Paul was equally excited to hear of Draggin’s achievement.
Draggin Jeans has shown incredible patience for the almost 5 years to date for which this project has been running. A lesser man (and company) would have walked away long ago.”said Varnsverry
Draggin Jeans is, and always will be, in the business of protecting motorcyclists. They are dedicated to ensuring that the Draggin lining remains at the forefront of fibre technology and provides the safest protection possible. Obtaining CE approval will add to our continued drive to improve rider safety, comfort and freedom.
The CE jean named C-Evo will immediately go into production and be available through Draggin stockists by the end of May. Draggin Jeans is a company that operates with an open mind and is focused on innovation in every aspect of the business.
BACKGROUND
Draggin Jeans has been safe guarding the skin of thousands of motorcyclists since 1997. It is the originator and leader in the category and driven from a love of riding.
Draggin Jeans is an Australian owned company and is the world leader in casual motorcycle fashion that ‘looks like’ street wear yet offers a level of personal safety that is unsurpassed in the category.
The name ‘Draggin’ is a combination of ‘dragon’, which had the toughest skin of any mythical creature and ‘dragging’ from the famous drag test™, having someone towed behind a bike at speed, laying on bitumen in the products.
This year Draggin Jeans was a finalist and recognised for its innovation in the fashion industry by the Fashion Group International.
Draggin Jeans global head quarters is in Port Melbourne. The collection boasts an impressive range that includes 8 styles of men’s jean, 5 styles of women’s jean, 9 coloured camouflage cargo pants, 4 jackets, and full length reinforced Kevlar undergarments, Draggin Jeans has a product for every rider.
Draggin lining represents a revolution in fibre technology. The trademark of Draggin is engineering a combination of knitted Kevlar® and Dyneema®, the World’s Strongest Fiber™ into the major crash points of all clothing. The lining is soft, breathable, flexible and non-allergenic. Draggin Jeans is the first casual clothing in the world to pass all the CE tests for abrasion, burst and tear resistance at the level that covers commuting and general highway and freeway riding.

WHAT ARE THE CE TESTS AND WHAT DOES CE APPROVAL MEAN?
It is sometimes difficult to make sense of the science involved in determining whether motorcycle clothing is truly protective. Many manufacturers take advantage of this to the detriment of riders. Words such as Kevlar are commonly used to falsely mislead as to protective qualities, and yellow is commonly used in non protective materials so as to create the illusion of protection. The European Standards or CE Tests were developed to address these types of misleading practices.
The CE tests are applied by scientific laboratories and strictly impose minimum safety requirements for various pieces of protective motorcycle clothing. They are independent, standardised, and repeatable. They are applied to ensure those products claiming to provide protection do just that. To gain CE Approval means that a product has successfully satisfied all of those imposed standards.
There are numerous European Standards regulating the protective qualities of motorcycle products; with one applying specifically to jackets, trousers and one-piece or divided suits; that is EN 13595, Parts 1 – 4.
Part 1 describes the general requirements of the materials used in the product and the specific zones subject to varied testing. For example, those areas of a product most likely to experience heavy and prolonged contact with the road are required to provide a significantly higher level of protection than those less likely to come in contact with the road surface. Design specifics also dictate the measures that must be taken to prevent the product moving on the body during an accident.
Parts 2, 3 and 4 refer specifically to the tests measuring abrasion, burst and tear resistance. Importantly, the tests applied in Parts 2,3, and 4 were designed specifically by Dr Roderick Woods of the Protective Clothing Research Facility (PCRF) at Cambridge University to replicate (and therefore represent most accurately) the forces experienced by motorcyclists during an off.
To test abrasive resistance, a section of the product is mounted on a hinged arm that is then released onto a constantly moving abrasive belt. The test continues until the sample is abraded through, whereupon the time taken from contact to perforation is recorded. (pic attached)
To test for burst strength, a small sample of the product is securely mounted to the top of a metal cylinder. Below the sample is a flexible membrane behind which water is pumped. The membrane distends, placing increasing pressure on the test specimen until, eventually, it fails. The water pressure at the point of failure is recorded.
Part 4 is a test for impact cut resistance and provides a “double-check” on the suitability of materials, as sharp impact can negatively affect a product’s other protective qualities. To test for impact cut resistance a standardised blade is dropped from a specified height onto the test segment and the depth of penetration of the blade is measured.
All of the CE Tests are simple in design, yet very effective in outcome. They all feature minimum requirements which are applied strictly and consistently. Furthermore they are not “material specific”; therefore denim products are held to exactly the same minimum standards as those applied to leathers and synthetics. The result is a series of standardised tests that provide a comparable and recognisable benchmark.
PAUL VARNSVERRY
The driving force behind PVA Technical File Services is Paul Varnsverry (pictured).Paul first became involved with the preparation of product standards in 1984. With an involvement in manufacturing protective clothing for motorcyclists, Paul was regularly consulted by the governing body of motorcycle sport in the UK: the Auto-Cycle Union.
Paul Varnsverry's work with the ACU expanded to incorporate his involvement with a technical subcommittee responsible for the drafting of a standard for competition clothing for motorcyclists. This standard was not implemented, but many of its doctrines can be found in European Standard EN 13595, which was published in 2002.
Paul has been involved in the development of the European standards for protective motorcycle clothing through his membership of both British Standards Institution (BSI) subcommittee PH/3/9 - in which capacity he is Principal UK Technical Expert - and Comité Européen de Normalisation (CEN) committee TC162/WG9; including his role as convenor of the WG9 Project Group charged with the responsibility of finalising European Standard EN 13595 Parts 1 to 4 for motorcyclists' jackets, trousers and suits.
Mr. Varnsverry is also Convenor of European Standards committee CEN/TC 162/WG11 (body protection for sports); with a very active and extensive work programme encompassing protection for martial arts, football, fencing, equestrian activities, roller sports, ice hockey and field hockey.
Mr. Varnsverry is also a specialist advisor to the Association of Chief Police Officers of England and Wales (ACPO) Motorcycle Project Group – a subcommittee of the ACPO National Uniform Project Group - and has drafted the technical content for the national operational requirement for police motorcyclists’ protective clothing.
Mr. Varnsverry regularly lectures both within the UKand Internationally, to both civilian and non-civilian audiences, including:
UK Ministry of Defence Lower Limb Protection SymposiumProtective Clothing and Survival Equipment ConferenceNational Tactical Trainers Conference (UK Police)Parliamentary Advisory Committee on Transport Safety British Motorcyclists’ FederationMotor Cycle Council of New South Wales (Australia)Tactics and Tactical Equipment Seminar (Canada)
Mr. Varnsverry has also written on developments in the field of motorcyclists’ clothing in “Textiles for Protection” (Woodhouse Publishing; ISBN-13:978-1-85573-921-5)Speaking on his work in the field of CE marking of PPE and product standards, Paul Varnsverry commented: "Consultation, dialogue, research and understanding are all issues to be covered if product development is to provide the client and the consumer with products which are fit for purpose. Through this philosophy, PVA Technical File Services strives to provide its clients with formidable levels of service. Our clients keep coming back to us with new projects, and as a fairly young company we are reassured by the constant stream of referrals which we are receiving; which suggests that our approach to business - both ours and that of our clients - is the right approach."
